As of 2005, there were approximately 18,000 Australians residing in Canada. This is not surprising, as Canada and Australia are both part of the Commonwealth and both English speaking nations. They share many of the same interests and cultural links.

Many come to Canada to work permanently, but many young Australians particularly enjoy coming to Canada on short-term visas and cultural exchange programs such as the Canadian Working Holiday program. Many more choose Canada as a place to study internationally.
